Workshops, Walks and Talks: Tanya Josham

TANYA JOSHAM
Artist and Stonemason. “The essential nature of a natural material can often take you on a journey you weren’t expecting when you began to work with it, but this is the enjoyment of artistic creation/sculpture, and if you go with it, you often find the end result is better than ever expected.

Often meeting and working with people of a creative nature sparks my imagination and encourages ideas to flow. It may be a word they say, a shape, a sound or an experience they relate to me; it’s hard to pinpoint the start of the idea exactly.”

Workshop: Stone carving
ALL DAY: Friday 21 August, 9.30 – 3.30 at Somerset Earth Science Centre BA3 5JU

Learn how to use traditional hand tools and techniques under the guidance of Tanya.

Exploring the story of the quarry from the formation of stone through to quarrying methods and then back to nature reclaiming the site, we will depict these stages, relief carving these images into stone panels, once completed these panels will assemble into a circle.

The technique we will be using is light relief carving. This is a sculptural form in which figures are carved in a flat panel of stone. The figures project only slightly from the background rather than standing freely, relying on light and shadow to enhance the image. Depending on the degree of projection, reliefs may also be classified as high or medium relief.
